Various studies across the world show that being a victim of crime, or even living in fear of becoming a victim of crime, can have serious health implications. According to the Health Impact Assessment (HIA) of Crime Prevention carried out by criminologist Dr Alex Hirschfield, some of the most common health problems reported by those who were (or fear they could become) crime victims include:
- Increased anxiety/stress levels
- Panic attacks
- Mental distress
- Difficulty sleeping
- Loss of appetite
- Loss of confidence
- Social isolation
- Increase in harmful behaviours (e.g. alcohol/drugs).
Crime prevention is key
One of the quickest and most effective ways of preventing household crimes such as breaking and entering, theft, assault and vandalism is obviously to install durable security measures like secure, lockable security doors and windows. In the crime HIA, Dr Hirschfield refers to a programme in Liverpool where 6,000 homes were fitted with free security measures like solid window and door locks in an attempt to reduce repeat burglary. The health status of each of the participants was assessed during and after the study. The project targeted vulnerable properties (crime hot spot areas) and people (the elderly, repeat victims, women).
Improved health benefits
The study showed positive results on the health of the participants. Because of the improved security measures, there were less break-ins and incidents of crime. This noticeably lessened the psychological distress of those involved. In particular, participants who had previously been victims of burglary and had since suffered ailments ranging from heightened stress, sickness and dizziness to depression and panic attacks reported improvements in their condition. They directly attributed their health improvements to the peace of mind gained from the installation of increased security measures.
Crimsafe for health
The results of the study speak for themselves – for your own peace of mind, simply make sure your home and family are as safe and secure as they can be. But there’s certainly no point doing a ‘token’ job when it comes to security measures – you need to install high-quality, tested products to act as real crime deterrents. This is where Crimsafe security doors and windows have proven their worth.
