Don’t get caught out
Many residents of high-rise buildings don’t feel the need to install security screens on their windows and doors as they are under the impression they are too high up to be broken into. Unfortunately high rise apartments are not immune to break-ins as some sneaky crooks have taken to scaling high rise buildings, targeting unsuspecting residents.
Brisbane and the Gold Coast targeted
On 15 November 2012 a burglar broke into six apartments in the same Kangaroo Point complex. According to the Queensland Police entry was gained by the offender climbing balcony to balcony, entering the apartments through sliding balcony doors and kitchen windows. Senior Sergeant Bishop stated that these incidents were very disturbing to the police. “The desperation of someone to commit these acts in such a manner and the fact that so many homes are unsecured at night when people are asleep in their beds is a concern for us. When it comes to security, high-rise buildings and apartments are just as vulnerable as other residential homes.”
This is not the first time that Kangaroo Point apartments have been targeted, earlier in the year a burglar scaled the outside of a high-rise building to access balconies and entered two apartments whilst the occupants were asleep. The burglar also attempted to break into a third apartments via the balcony.
Toowong apartments have also been targeted by criminals, with 12 high-rise apartments being broken into in the one weekend this month, with some of the targeted apartments being as high as the seventh floor. Easy-to-carry items such as jewellery and cash were the main items taken in the burglaries.
In October 2012, a Gold Coast teenager was charged after breaking into a number of high-rise buildings in the Burleigh Heads and Palm Beach area. The man reportedly scaled the outside of the buildings to access the balconies. In the same month a Noosa apartment was burgled after gaining access through an unlocked balcony sliding door. Not only did the burglar take personal items from the apartment, but took car keys which enabled them to steal a Nissan X-Trail from the apartment basement car park.
Security is key
To protect yourself, your loved ones and your possessions from these high-rise crimes, install Crimsafe security screens. Crimsafe is the only security screen product in Australia where the mesh is screwed into the frame and clamped down with a patented device called the “Screw-ClampTM “. Most other security screen mesh systems sold in Australia are held in place with a wedge forced in under pressure, or are simply glued in.
Crimsafe security screens give you maximum protection, without hindering your view and Crimsafe also allows you to keep intruders out, whilst letting cool breezes in – perfect for summer!
Be vigilant and make sure you keep your doors locked on your balcony, whilst you are out, asleep or even in another room.
