It is an awful feeling to walk into your house and realise you have been robbed. The feeling of violation, the loss of sentimental and expensive items and the mess you are left to deal with can often be overwhelming. Here are some easy steps you can take now to make your life easier in the event of a burglary.
Write a list of your belongings:
This will help you determine exactly what items of property are missing in the event of a burglary so you can accurately report to the police and your insurance company. (Don’t forget to include valuable items in your shed or in your car ie. tools).
Take photos of your valuables:
These photos are helpful to give to both the police and your insurance company. Placing a ruler next to the items you are photographing assists with verifying their size. Keeping backup copies (negatives/CD) of these photos is a good idea.
Mark your property:
Marking your property discourages theft as marked property is more difficult for the thief to offload. Marked property also helps police to identify and return it to the rightful owner.
Your local police station will have engravers you can borrow. You should engrave your own personal code on your property eg. If you name was Julie Smith, you are born on 19 April 1963 and you reside in Queensland, your personal code would be JS190463Q. Be warned that not all items are suitable for engraving.
You can also take advantage of Microdot technology, which allows you to add micro labels, approximately the size of a grain of sand, which are engraved with an identification code, undetectable to the naked eye. Microdot kits are also available from Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) branches throughout Queensland and from a variety of retailers.
Check Your Insurance:
Check what your insurance policy covers and ensure it is current.
